Choreographer, educator, ballet artist
Born 31 July 1932 in Rīga. Received her vocational education qualification at the Rīga Secondary School of Choreography, in the class of Helēna Tangijeva-Birzniece (1945–1953), and later worked as a soloist at the Latvian Opera and Ballet Theatre.
Her portrayals of temperamental characters were particularly noteworthy. The artist’s stage image remains most prominent in the memory in the ballets Bolero and Cuban Melodies. She not only retained the image of a hot-tempered southerner on the stage, but also embodied the role of a gypsy in the films Vella kalpi (The Devil’s Servants) and Vella kalpi Vella dzirnavās (The Devil’s Servants at the Devil’s Mill).
The artist first encountered amateur dancers in the Dancis folk-dance ensemble, whose director Alfrēds Spura invited her to be his assistant (1970–1977). The experience gained here proved instrumental in her leadership of the Rotaļa (Dancing Game) folk-dance ensemble (1977–2002). While guiding this group, the artist’s talent for creating new dances was unleashed, and what have become Latvian folk-dance classics – Latvju polka (Latvian Polka), Plācenītis (Cakelet), Tūdaliņ, tagadiņ, Kur tu augi daiļa meita (Where are you from my Beauty), Rūdolfa smaids (Rudolph’s Smile) – were created for Rotaļa, and many splendid concert performances staged. The Rotaļa folk-dance ensemble led by Baumane has received not only professional acclaim but also unceasing applause and ovations from audiences. The artist’s creative experience has been utilised in her role as a movement consultant and choreographer at the Daile Theatre, where the Rotaļa folk-dance ensemble has participated in productions.
In parallel, Baumane has also worked as a folk-dance lecturer at the Culture and Education Technical School and at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian State Conservatory.
